Custom Shopify App vs App Store Apps: When to Build Your Own
When a Shopify App Store app is enough, when a custom Shopify app makes more sense, and how to decide based on cost, speed, data and how your team works.
The Shopify App Store has an app for almost everything, and for most new stores that is exactly the right place to start. But as stores grow, many end up paying for a long list of apps that don't talk to each other, while someone on the team still moves data between them by hand. Here is how to decide when an off-the-shelf app is enough and when a custom Shopify app is worth building.
When App Store apps are the right choice
- The problem is common. Reviews, email marketing, subscriptions and shipping labels are solved well by mature apps.
- You need it this week. Installing an app takes minutes; building one takes weeks.
- Your process is still changing. Don't build custom software for a workflow you haven't settled yet.
- The monthly fee is small compared with the time the app saves.
Signs it is time for a custom Shopify app
- You glue apps together by hand. If a person exports from one app and imports into another every day, that is a missing integration.
- Your app bill keeps growing. Several apps that each solve a small part of one problem can often be replaced by one focused app.
- Your business rules are unusual. Custom pricing, B2B rules, bundles, made-to-order products or complex fulfilment often don't fit generic settings.
- You need to connect your own system. An ERP, warehouse system, POS or internal database needs a reliable connection to Shopify.
- Store speed is suffering. Apps that inject scripts into your theme can slow every page. A custom app loads only what you need.
- You need control over your data. Reports and logic that live in a third-party app are hard to change or move.
What a custom Shopify app can do
- React to events such as new orders, refunds or inventory changes using webhooks
- Read and update products, orders and customers through Shopify's Admin API
- Add custom discount, shipping or payment logic using Shopify Functions
- Add screens inside the Shopify admin so your team never leaves Shopify
- Sync data with your other systems on a schedule or in real time
Custom app vs public app
A custom app is built for one store (or one company's stores) and is not listed in the App Store. A public app is listed in the App Store and installed by many merchants, which brings extra requirements such as billing, onboarding and an admin for the app team. We wrote about that side in Building a Shopify App Admin Dashboard.
A simple way to decide
- List every app you pay for and what each one does.
- Mark the manual steps your team does between them.
- Add up the monthly app fees and the hours spent on manual steps.
- Compare that with the one-time cost of a custom app plus maintenance.
If the numbers are close, stay with apps. If the manual work and fees keep growing every month, a custom app usually pays for itself.
