Why Your Shopify Store Is Slow (and How to Fix It)

The most common reasons Shopify stores load slowly, from too many apps to heavy images and leftover code, and a step-by-step plan to make your store faster.

A slow store loses sales. Shoppers on mobile data won't wait for a heavy homepage, and Google uses page experience as one of its ranking signals. The good news: most Shopify speed problems come from a handful of causes, and most of them can be fixed without rebuilding your theme.

How to measure your store's speed

  • Shopify's web performance report in your admin analytics shows how fast your store loads for real visitors.
  • Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) tests one page and lists what slows it down. Test your homepage, a collection page and a product page.
  • Always look at the mobile results first.

The 7 most common causes

1. Too many apps

Many apps add their own JavaScript and CSS to every page, even pages where the app does nothing. Ten apps can mean ten extra scripts loading before your customer sees a product.

2. Code left behind by uninstalled apps

Some apps leave snippets in your theme after you uninstall them. The app is gone, but its code still loads or throws errors. Check your theme files for references to apps you no longer use.

3. Large images

Uploading 5 MB photos straight from a camera is one of the biggest causes of slow pages. Resize and compress images before uploading, and use your theme's image settings instead of forcing full-size images.

4. Autoplay videos and sliders

A homepage slider with five large images or a background video loads a lot before anything useful appears. One strong hero image usually converts as well and loads much faster.

5. Heavy or heavily modified themes

Themes packed with features you don't use, or edited by many developers over the years, often carry unused code. Shopify's newer themes are built to be fast, so moving to one can be faster than patching an old theme.

6. Too many tracking scripts

Every pixel, chat widget, heatmap and pop-up tool adds weight. Keep the ones you actually use to make decisions and remove the rest.

7. Custom fonts

Several font families and weights can delay text from appearing. Use one or two fonts and only the weights you need.

A step-by-step plan

  1. Measure your current speed and save the results.
  2. List every installed app and remove the ones you don't need.
  3. Check the theme for leftover code from removed apps.
  4. Compress and resize your largest images, starting with the homepage.
  5. Replace sliders and autoplay video with a single hero image.
  6. Remove unused tracking scripts and widgets.
  7. Measure again and compare.

When apps are the problem

If you need several apps for one workflow, a single custom app that does exactly what you need is often lighter and cheaper. Read Custom Shopify App vs App Store Apps to decide.
